Why Iran Would Likely Cost More

Iran presents a fundamentally different military challenge than Iraq. Its territory is nearly four times larger with mountainous terrain that favors defense. Iran's military is better equipped, better trained, and has had decades to prepare defensive strategies. The ballistic missile threat alone would require extensive and costly missile defense operations.

The Proxy Factor

Unlike Iraq, Iran maintains a network of well-armed proxy forces across the Middle East, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthis in Yemen. A conflict with Iran would likely trigger simultaneous engagements across multiple theaters, multiplying costs.

Naval Dimension

The Iraq War was primarily a land campaign. An Iran conflict would require a massive naval component to secure the Strait of Hormuz and protect commercial shipping, adding a cost dimension that didn't exist in Iraq.
